Full Professor of Wood Technology at University of Florence (Italy)
Coordinator of the 3-years graduate curriculum "Wood Technologies", and member of the PhD curriculum "Wood Sciences".
Member of various scientific and technical Societies and Academies, including: Accademia Italiana di Scienze forestali (Italian Academy of Forest Sciences) â€“ Accademia dei Georgofili â€“ FPRS (Forest Products Research Society - USA) â€“ IAWS (International Academy of Wood Science) â€“ ICOMOS International Wood Committee.
Participated in various COST Actions (508, E5, E8, E24, E35) dealing with structural, mechanical and rheological behaviour of wood and wood-based materials, and with mechanics of wood machining.
Active in national and European Standardisation Committees (UNI, CEN, ISO) in the Wood sector, including UNI Technical Committee "Wood" (Vice Chairman), and Working Group 20 "Wood and wood-based materials" of UNI Technical Committee "Cultural Heritage".
Author of over 120 publications (papers, reports and books), mainly concerning properties of selected wood species, processing grading and uses of structural timbers, surface quality and surface formation mechanics in wood machining, study and conservation of wooden artworks belonging to Cultural Heritage (panel paintings, timber structures, wooden sculptures, etc.).
Scientific Manager of various research grants, including: Italian Ministry for Research national project "Conservation of load-bearing timber structures of historical interest" â€“ Uffizi Project and Cultural Heritage Project, by Italian National Council for Research - European Commission, DG XII â€“ European CRAFT Project on improving blades for wood machining.
Presently dealing mainly with the following subjects:
- technological evaluation of wooden supports of paintings; relationships between environmental thermohygrometric parameters, their variations, distortion dynamics of panel paintings, consequent stresses, damage of paint layers; in this latter field cooperating with Italian and foreign research Institutions, Monuments and Fine Arts Agencies, Restoration Laboratories.
- evaluation and grading of load-bearing structural timber (Chairman of Working Group 1 "Structural timber" of the UNI "Wood" Committee)
- surface quality and surface formation mechanics in wood machining.
